Modern Kitchen Designs

Anyone from a large family will tell you that the kitchen is the center of the household. People are always in and out of the kitchen: cooking dinner, stopping to chat, or popping in to get a drink. If you are spending a significant amount of time in your kitchen, it makes sense that you would focus your upgrades on this area of your home. Try out one of these modern kitchen ideas next time your home needs a new look.

Modern Kitchen Idea #1: Less is more.

The path to making any room in your home look more modern is simple: clean lines, open floor plan, minimal clutter, and optimized for functionality. This formula is easy to translate to the kitchen.

An all white kitchen can be a great addition to some homes. White cabinets and countertops can be paired with hardwood floors and wooden bar stools to create a simple, clean profile. Add a vase of greenery for a splash of color and you will have a modern kitchen that will not detract from the living room or dining area.

Modern Kitchen Idea #2: Black is always a good option.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, you could try an all black kitchen. This works well for all of the same reasons as the white. Black goes with everything and it can be incorporated into your light fixtures, appliances, countertops, and shelves. We recommend pairing light wood accents with your black features in order to balance out the colors and make the space feel more welcoming.

Modern Kitchen Idea #3: Go gray.

If black and white are not appealing to you, consider a gray color pallet. A cool gray tone can be calming, especially when paired with lighter colored countertops. This is a more modern take on the all metallic, stainless steel kitchens that were found in every designer magazine in the early 2000s.

Modern Kitchen Idea #4: Replace cabinets with shelves.

Walls of cabinets are great because they offer tons of storage space, but they can quickly make a kitchen appear dated. Instead, install open shelves in your kitchen and use those to store your plates and serving dishes. We recommend using unfinished wood for your shelving, but painted or metallic shelves can work well in certain scenarios.

Modern Kitchen Idea #5: Add a pop of color.

If you just love bright colors, consider combining two of the above ideas. An all white kitchen can look great with a pop of yellow or orange. If you choose to replace your cabinets with shelves, the brightly colored dishes that you already own can quickly become one of the room’s most prominent decorations.

An added bonus to using dishes as decorations is that you will not have to waste valuable kitchen space by including actual decorations. While a vase of flowers looks nice, it is not the most functional addition and as we all know, functionality is key to modern decorating.
